Learning Objectives:
At the end of the session, the learners will understand how the LCDN UNITE Project "A Step"  curriculum will be presented using technology designed to facilitate dialogue and a sense of community. The learners will understand how the technology chosen for curriculum distribution will also serve as a vehicle for interdisciplinary team activity locally as well as a bridge between the urban medical center and the rural clinics.

Activity C: Creating a Virtual Community of Rural Health Practitioners

Discuss the concept of a Community of Practice.  Communities of Practice are networks of individuals working in a common area of interest to capitalize on each other's expertise while collectively defining and developing current practice and moving the practice in new directions. What is a Community Of Practice?

LCDN UNITE  provides the infrastructure for the establishment of a virtual community of rural health practitioners and educational and professional organizations who provide and exchange relevant medical education. Rural an urban practitioners can engage in online activity - case studies, modules, courses, communicate with their peers in clinical discussion forums and seek clinical information for interdisciplinary community healthcare practice.

Healthcare in remote rural clinics is often an isolated experience. The LCDN UNITE Project and A Step web based interdisciplinary curriculum seeks to develop a community of practice, which will serve as a peer support and action network. Learners and faculty facilitators will grow professionally while collaborating to identify and begin to better understand and solve complex community healthcare challenges.

How will the community of practice operate?
• Case Presentation
• Case Analysis
• Facilitated Threaded Discussion
• Identification of issues/concerns
• Grouping/clustering of related issues/concerns
• Prioritization of issues to address
• Development of a plan of action
